About Us

Gungahlin Gymnastics is the realisation of a long held dream for Canberra locals Joel and Megan Moss. Joel is a former elite gymnast who represented Australia around the world while Megan is an experienced sports administrator and dance teacher. Combined they have years of experience coaching and teaching children and adults of all ages and abilities in a variety of sports. Gungahlin Gymnastics opened in April 2015 and we have experienced rapid growth since the first day of classes. We opened with two coaches and 20 classes on the timetable. We finished 2021 with 1600 gymnasts, a coaching team of 45 and two fully equipped gymnastics facilities in Mitchell, ACT. Our team of accredited coaches are employed for their ability to relate to children and their ability to embrace fun. We value fun and safety above all other outcomes and our coaches must demonstrate this philosophy in every class. Every gymnast in our club from our youngest Kindergym toddlers to our highest level competitive squads is a valuable part of our gymnastics family.

Our number one goal at Gungahlin Gymnastics is to have fun; fun learning, fun developing and fun experiencing the great sport of gymnastics. Gymnastics provides so many opportunities to learn and grow with the basic skills and movement patterns in gymnastics class transferrable to many different sports and to life in general. Gymnastics teaches perserverence, resilience and a growth mindset and our programs all aim to foster these key attributes in our gymnasts so they leave each class confident and keen to learn more. We proudly have our vision, mission and values on the walls of our facilities to remind everyone what is most important and why we are here everyday.

We aim to cater for anyone who wants to give gymnastics a go, whether that means participating in a class once a week or reaching for the stars and aiming for the highest level of competition. The great thing about gymnastics is that it can cater to every level of experience and you decide how far you want to take it for you or your child. We offer competitive levels for girls and boys in the ACT Club Level competitions from Level 5 and above and we run a small and very targeted National Levels program for girls and boys. We hold in-house competitions for Levels 1 and above and an end of year showcase involving all members aged 5 and above to enable our gymnasts to present the skills they have learnt across the year to their family and friends. All in-house competitions and events are completely optional.

Joel Moss - Director / Head Coach

Joel is the Head Coach of the Club and is responsible for developing all programs to meet the needs of our members. Joel commenced gymnastics at the age of 5 and participated in gymnastics, tennis, football, cricket and swimming until he decided at the age of 12 that he wanted to take gymnastics further and focused solely on gym. He has been the National Champion both in the all-around and on individual apparatus on over 15 occasions and moved from the national levels stream of gymnastics to the elite level at the age of 18.

Joel was a full scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport for four years up to his retirement from elite gymnastics in 2006 and he managed to complete a degree in Computer Engineering while training at the highest level. He has represented Australia at two Gymnastics World Championships, three World University Games and a number of other international competitions at the elite level. Despite his experience at the elite level, Joel is committed to gymnastics being a sport for all ages and abilities and is passionate about children developing a love for the sport no matter what their ability or long term goals are.

Since retiring from elite level gymnastics, Joel has completed a Masters of Business at ANU and has worked as a computer engineer for two local companies. His dream of running his own gym is now a reality with Gungahlin Gymnastics and he loves welcoming budding gymnasts of all ages and abilities to our gym. Joel is a fully qualified and accredited men's artistic, women's artistic and kindergym coach. Joel completed his International Gymnastics Federation Level 2 coaching accreditation in December 2018 and is our highest qualified coach. He remains active in the gym himself and often declares he will be doing giants on the horizontal bar when he is 70!

Megan Moss - Director / Head Kindergym Coach

Megan is an experienced sports coach having been involved in teaching gymnastics, hockey and dance to children over a number of years. She is primarily responsible for our Kindergym program and the administration side of the club. Megan is our Club Delegate Director on the Board of Gymnastics ACT and is currently President utilising the skills and experience she gained through seven years of work at the Australian Sports Commission. Megan is also on the Board of the Australian Physie and Dance Association (APDA Limited).

In addition to gymnastics, Megan's passion is teaching children to dance at Gungahlin Physie and Dance Club, located in our purpose built studio upstairs in Unit 4 of the Gungahlin Gymnastics and Dance Centre. Megan founded the dance club eight years ago and over that time the club has grown from just 25 members to over 120 in 2019. Megan provides the basic dance and ballet program for our higher level gymnastics classes and is the choreographer for our competitive girls floor routines.

Megan has a passion for teaching children of all ages but particularly enjoys coaching young children in the 1 - 5 year age bracket which fits nicely with her role as Head Kindergym Coach. She is a fully qualified Kindergym and Women's Artistic Gymnastics coach, a women's gymnastics judge and has experience coaching men's artistic gymnastics. Megan and Joel have a daughter, Tash, who you will no doubt see around the gym.

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, family friendly club where you get to know our family and we get to know yours.
